Space to Breathe
Space to breathe
Take in a DEEP breath of fresh air and hold your breath as long as you can, a bit longer, just a little longer – you start feeling anxious, your hart increases more and more, you can feel the veins on your face bulging and you even feel dizzy – this will be our permanent experience should we cease to plant Trees and plants.
Precious oxygen – without it and water, we cannot exist!! We illustrate in a fun and informal way how numerous species are dependent on oxygen, whether they are on land, see and also live underground!! The learners are often pleasantly surprised to ascertain just how many species are dependent on oxygen and usually on my question ‘do you think fish need oxygen, I hear a chorus of ‘NOOOOOO’….
We explore how different species breathe, for example with lungs, gills, book lungs and learn big words like “Stomatoes“ and “Spiracles“.
We visit the Earthworm for a few moments and the unbelievable value of these little worms add to provide the soil with oxygen where we grow our vegetables and fruit. They are indeed the most effective fertilisers and are willing to even eat newspapers, egg holders and teabags in order for our plants to grow lavishly. AND thus contribute to recycling!! The learners meet earthworms, understand that although they do not have noses, they breathe with their whole bodies, stress highly when not underground and do their jobs effortlessly and without any fanfare.
So where on earth does oxygen come from???
And if animals breathe, what about plants?? The learners understand how important photosynthesis is and how wonderfully plant, animal and humans can collaborate to allow each other to exist!
We explore who are the enemies of our oxygen supply, and the most important of all, how do we conserve trees and plants, also how each child can make a difference to ensure that all of us will have sufficient oxygen!
